Superstorm Sandy devastated the coast and has made our work to protect and improve marine waterways even more important. Our network plays a key role in helping to restore the shore with resiliency and environmental stewardship.

Clean Ocean Action (“COA”) is a leading national and regional voice working to protect waterways using science, law, research, education, and citizen action. Founded in 1984, COA is a broad-based coalition of 135 active boating, business, community, conservation, diving, environmental, fishing, religious, service, student, surfing, and women’s groups.

Our newest initiative, the “Waves of Action” program, will respond to the impacts of Superstorm Sandy and help improve and protect the marine environment. COA is engaging its network of organizations, businesses, citizens, and municipalities to help coastal communities throughout New Jersey and New York in need over the long term with volunteer action.

Future Waves of Action days in 2013 will progress with the needs of communities and will keep the momentum going for continued improvement of the shore through debris clean ups, sustainable development plans, and projects to improve water quality. So far, Waves of Action has had over 70 projects across New York and New Jersey with 3,800 registered volunteers. To see photos and to learn more about COA’s year long program visit
